Obituary of Robert Ivan O’Connor

A life well lived – Robert Ivan O’Connor passed away peacefully April 14, 2020 at the Saint John Regional Hospital at the age of 87. Ivan was born on November 27, 1932 in Alma, NB to the late Daniel J.and Rosella (Hoey) O’Connor. Ivan was a proud firefighter for over 30 years with the Saint John Fire Department as a Lieutenant. During his career he received the Exemplary Service Medal and Long Service Medal from New Brunswick Fire Service. Ivan was an avid hunter and salmon fisherman, and he enjoyed gardening at his cottage in the Narrows. Ivan was a member of several organizations including; City of Saint John Retirees Association, Hammond River Angling Association, Atlantic Salmon Federation, SPAWN, CSA, Mill Stream Valley Snowmobile Club, 8th Hussars Princess Louise, and Beaus & Bells Square Dance Club. Ivan will be dearly missed by his wife Esther (Larsen) of 63 years, sons; Paul (Patty Murphy) and Jay (Debbie), brother J. Cyril (Pat Thompson), grandchildren; Christopher, Matthew, Holly- Jean, great grandchildren; Lillie and Cole, ‘Murphy Grandchildren’; Sarah, Jack, Gregory, Colin, Ciaran, Clancy, Jeffrey, and Peter, niece Pauline (Shane) Dunfield dear friend and neighbor Ralph Johnson. Ivan is predeceased by his parents, sister Danice Whittaker, sister- in law Marie Despres, and niece Katherine Dube. Arrangements have been entrusted to Castle Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Avenue, Saint John, NB E2M2L3 506-634-1701. Due to the current health crisis, a Funeral Service will be held at a later date. Interment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in Ivan’s memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of the donor’s choice.
