Obituary of Dorothy Stears

Stears, Dorothy Jean (McCavour) With profound sadness and regret, the family of Dorothy Jean (McCavour) Stears announces her passing on August 11 at Loch Lomond Villa. The wife of the late George Stears, Dorothy was born in Saint John in 1926, the daughter of Reata (Lodge) and Melvin H. McCavour. She will be sorely missed by her son Rod (Beverly Stairs), daughter Shelley MacLean (Mike Gillis), and grandchildren Ryan (Meghan McCully) and Andrew MacLean (Megan McNulty), Nikola and Connor Stears, Jonathan Bustin, and great-granddaughter Bentlee Bustin, great grandson Trey MacLean, sister-in-law Doris (McCavour) Hatfield, as well as several nieces and nephews. Dorothy loved to travel, especially family camping trips to Sebago Lake and later on vacations in Florida with George. Dorothy was well known for her mastery in the kitchen, having catered and taught cooking for home entertainment courses for several years. Her recipes were highly sought after. Dorothy was extremely artistic and creative, taking after her father Melvin. She was an excellent seamstress, who was also adept at many other crafts such as smocking, cross-stitching, and tole painting. She had a strong love for family, evident in her keen interest in genealogy and a strong connection to Lorneville. Dorothy loved a good laugh and was a skilled storyteller. With a strong sense of community, until her eyesight failed Dorothy volunteered for charities such as Meals for Wheels, and the Y’s Menettes. Dorothy is pre-deceased by her husband George, infant son Peter Lodge Stears and son Kim Harold Stears (Diane Bustin). The last surviving member of her immediate family, Dorothy is also pre-deceased by her parents, brother Percy McCavour, and sisters Rozella McCavour and Caroline Parlee. She is resting at Castle Funeral Home, with visitation Tuesday, August 12, from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday August 13, from 2-4 and 7-9. The funeral service will be held at Castle Funeral Home on Thursday, August 14, at 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers donations to St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, CNIB or Lorneville Cemetery are appreciated. Funeral arrangements are in the care of Castle Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave., Saint John, NB E2M 2L3. Online condolences may be sent to www.castlefh.com
